Ivo of Chartres was born to a noble family in Beauvais and studied in Paris and the Abbey of Bec in Normandy. It was through his position as prior of the canons of St-Quentin at Beauvais that Ivo became known as one of the best teachers in France during that time. In 1090, he was appointed Bishop of Chartres, a position that he held for 25 years. Ivo’s opposition to King Philip I of France resulted in a short period of imprisonment in 1092. He is the author of canonical writings, including Tripartita, Decretum and Panormia, as well as many letters and sermons. TLM
