Jacobus was born at Viraggio (Voragine), near Genoa, around 1230. He entered the Order of the Dominicans in 1244. He preached throughout Italy and was elected provincial of Lombardy in 1267. After absolving the people of Genoa in 1288 as commissioned by Pope Nicholas IV, Jacobus became the archbishop of Genoa in 1292. He is known for the compilation of hagiographies in Legenda Aurea (the Golden Legend). TLM
