Nithard, a grandson of Charlemagne, was a lay abbot and Frankish historian in the ninth century. In service to King Charles the Bald, he went on missions to the German emperor Lothair in 840 but without success. In 841, he fought in the battle of Fontenoy. At the request of Charles, Nithard wrote De dissensionibus filiorum Ludovici pii (On the Dissensions of the Sons of Louis the Pious), which though a partisan account offers a useful first-hand account of the political and military problems that accompanied the break-up of the Carolingian Empire.
