A Benedictine monk, possibly at St. Gall, named Bishop of Liege in 972, and in 980 named Prince-Bishop there. He is a foundational figure in the development and fame of the Liege schools. Politically, he was generally a powerful ally to the Ottonian emperors, Otto II, Henry II and Otto III.
