Elected Pope in 1159, Alexander III spent his first years in the papacy in exile due to opposition from a series of antipopes aided by Frederick Barbarossa. He later convened the Third Lateran Council, and was involved in the dispute over church rights between Henry II and Thomas Becket, not thoroughly backing Becket but eventually forcing Henry II to ask for pardon after Becket’s death.
