Arnaud Aubert was born in Limoges. Rising rapidly through the church hierarchy due to the influence of his uncle and close confidant, Innocent VI (1352-62), Arnaud was appointed Archbishop of Auch and papal chamberlain in 1360 and continued in that position under Urban V (1362-71) and briefly under Gregory XI (1371-78).
