Charles was part of the French royal family and author of over five hundred extant poems. He was born in 1394 and became the Duke of Orléans at age fourteen when his father was murdered. While fighting in the Hundred Year War, Charles was captured at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. His captivity in England lasted twenty-four years during which time he wrote most of his poetry. In 1440, he returned to Orléans and died at Ambroise in 1465. TLM
