Nicetas Choniates, a Byzantine historian, was born in Chonia in modern-day Turkey. His father sent him and his brother Michael to Constantinople for their education. Nicetas became involved in politics and rose in rank in the imperial court. At the Fourth Crusade in 1204 he left Constantinople for Nicaea, where he spent the rest of his life. He wrote a history composed of twenty-one books which covers the period from 1180 to 1206. His other works are On Statues destroyed by the Latins and the theological work on heresies called Treasure of Orthodoxy. TLM
