Author of one of the most important sources for the turbulent late 13th and early 14th century history of Italy, Dino Compagni was a Florentine official who recounted the political and diplomatic struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines (supporters of the pope and emperor, respectively) in his Chronicle.
