Conon de Bethune (ca. 1150 -1219/20) was born in the former Artois region, today Pas-de-Calais. He was a crusader and trouvere, or troubadour, writing in Old French instead of Provencal. He played many roles in the Outremer crusader states, including Regent of the Empire in 1219. Fourteen of his poems survive, some of which have an uncertain attribution.
