Cyril succeeded his uncle Theophilus as the Patriarch of Alexandria in 412. In this position, he persecuted many Jews and heretical Novatians. His strong theological opinions about the term theotokus ("God-bearer") as applied to the Virgin Mary and the nature of Christ were in opposition to those of Nestorius, Patriach of Constantinople. He wrote a number of exegeses as well as sermons and letters that still survive. TLM
