John Scottus Erigena was born and educated in Ireland before he came to the court of Charles the Bald in 847 and was appointed head of the palace school. He was commissioned to translate works of Pseudo-Dionysius and he completed a number of other translations from Greek. He also wrote commentaries, theological and philosophical works and poems. Some of these works, such as On Predestination and On the Division of Nature, were condemned as heretical. Eriugena spent his life in France (Paris and Laon) and is believed to have died there. TLM
