William Fitzstephen was a retainer of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, whose murder he witnessed in 1170. After the saint’s death, Fitzstephen wrote the biography of his life as well as an account of twelfth-century London. King Henry II, although an enemy of Thomas Becket, appointed Fitzstephen as Sheriff of Gloucestor after the murder. TLM
