Geoffrey of Monmouth was born c.1100, possibly in Monmouth, Wales. He entered the church and spent twenty years at Oxford, where he was a secular canon at St. George’s College. He became archdeacon of Llandsaff in 1140 and bishop of St. Asaph in Wales in 1152. He is responsible for the development of British history and myth through his stories of the founding of Britain and the legends of King Arthur found in his major work Historia Regum Britanniae. TLM
