Much of what is known about Gildas comes from later biographies by a monk of Rhuys and another by Caradoc of Llancarfan, which are not considered to be accurate. He is thought to have been born in northern Britain but spent time in Ireland, where he became a priest. Perhaps on his way back from Rome, Gildas established a monestary at Rhuys, Brittany. His major work De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae recounts the history of post-Roman Britain and attacks British kings and clergy for their sins. TLM
