A Dominican and an Inquisitor (memorably portrayed by F. Murray Abraham in the film adaptation of Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose), Bernard Gui provides a wealth of insight into the heresies of southern France in his voluminous works. He is best known for his inquisitors handbook which drew upon his vast practical experience obtained during inquisitorial trials and served as an educational tool for new inquisitors attempting to carry out their duties.
