Born to a noble family in the Oise, he was educated in Beauvais and is thought to have been courtier and minstrel in the court of Philip II during his young adulthood. Around 1182, he joined the Cistercian monastery at Froidmont. As a monk, Helinand wrote a famous world history, moral treatises, commentaries and letters.
