John Kinnamos was a Byzantine historian of the twelfth century and the secretary (grammatikos) to Emperor Manuel I Komnenos. His history continues Anna Comnena’s Alexiad and covers the events of the Byzantine Empire from 1118 to 1176, including the reign of John II and Manuel I. Kinnamos probably witnessed the events of the last ten years he describes as he went on military campaigns in Europe and Asia Minor with the Emperor. It is also a great source of information on the Second Crusade from a Byzantine perspective. TLM
