The works of Liutprand of Cremona, a Lombard historian and bishop, are an important source for 10th century political and ecclesiastical events in Italy. Sent on frequent diplomatic missions to the Pope and to the court of Constantinople, first in favor and later out of favor with the Italian King Berengar and his consort Willa, Liutprand conveys in his often polemic writings the intricacies of diplomacy, a sometimes vicious satire of life at the Italian and Byzantine courts, and the history of the Ottonian rise to power.
