Ibn al-‘Arabī, an Andalusian Sufi mystic and philosopher, was born on August 7, 1165 in Murcia, Spain to a family in service to the current ruler o the area, Muhammad b. Mardanīsh. Highly educated, Ibn al-‘Arabī is was a prolific writer and remains an important figure in Sufism. Ibn al-‘Arabī was well travelled throughout the Islamic world, where he was alternately welcomed and rejected by authorities for his writings on the Sufi Way. He died in Damascus on November 10, 1240.
