Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Roman Britain at Kilpatrick in 387. He taken as a captive to Ireland at sixteen years old and sold as a slave. It was during this time that his Christian faith strengthened. When he was freed, Patrick briefly returned to Britain but spent most of his life as a missionary in Ireland. Two of his letters in Latin survive: Confessio and Letter to Coroticus. He died in Saul, Downpatrick in 493 (or possibly 460). TLM
