Tacitus was born into an equestrian family in northern Italy or southern Gaul. He studied rhetoric to prepare for a career in politics and eventually became a senator of the Roman Empire. As a historian, he covered the reign of Roman emporers in his most well-known works, the Annals and the Histories. Two other important works by Tacitus are Germania, about the Germanic peoples, lands and customs, and Agricola , a biography of his father-in-law. TLM
