Theophanes was a monk and chronicler of Byzantine history born to a wealthy family in Constantinople. He is known as the founder of a monastery and an abbey as well as a supporter of icons, which led to his imprisonment for two years by the iconoclast Emperor Leo the Armenian. After the death of his friend George Syncellus, Theophanes finished writing Syncellus’ chronicle from 810 to 815. TLM
