Thomas was an Anglo-Norman poet of the 12th century who wrote the Old French poem Tristan. This version of the Tristan and Iseult legend exists only in fragments mostly from the end of the story. Thomas’ Tristan is the earliest known example of the "courtly branch" of the Tristan legend upon which Gottfried von Strassburg based his Tristan. Little else is known about Thomas’ life.
