Often called the "Father of Art History," Giorgio Vasari was himself a (somewhat mediocre) Tuscan painter and architect. He wrote a series of biographies of the sculptors, painters, and architects of the Italian Renaissance. While we owe much of the incidental information we know about these artists to Vasari’s work, it is highly opinionated and presents Michelangelo as the pinnacle of Italian art and culture, the true "Renaissance Man."
