Polydore Vergil was an Italian historian born at Urbino. After studying in Bologna and Padua, he worked as secretary to the Duke of Urbino and chamberlain to Alexander VI. His two early works were published during this time: Proverbiorum libellus (1498), a collection of classical proverbs, and the popular De inventoribus rerum (1499). In 1501, the pope sent Vergil to England to collect papal taxes. There he remained, serving several positions in English churches while researching and writing the Historia Anglica as requested by King Henry VII. Vergil returned to Urbino in 1553 and died there two years later. TLM
